Sutton Foster Returns to Broadway in 'Once Upon a Mattress'
The Tony Award-winning actress and singer talks to InStyle about her latest role
Sutton Foster is a two-time Tony Award-winning actress, singer, and dancer who has most recently been seen on Broadway in the highly acclaimed musical "The Music Man." She is now set to return to Broadway in the title role of the Broadway revival of "Once Upon a Mattress."
"This is a show that I've always loved," Foster tells InStyle. "The music is so beautiful and the story is so funny. I'm so excited to get to play Princess Winnifred."
Foster is no stranger to the demands of playing a princess on Broadway. She previously starred as Sandy Dumbrowski in the 1994 Broadway revival of "Grease." However, she says that the role of Princess Winnifred is unique.
"Princess Winnifred is a very strong and independent woman," Foster says. "She's not afraid to speak her mind and she's always fighting for what she believes in. I think that's something that really resonates with audiences today."
Foster says that she is also drawn to the show's message of love and acceptance.
"This is a show that celebrates diversity and inclusion," Foster says. "It's a show that says that it's okay to be different. I think that's a really important message for people of all ages."
Foster is set to begin performances in "Once Upon a Mattress" on November 15, 2023. Tickets are on sale now.
