A Day to Remember the Iron Horse and Raise Awareness for ALS

On June 2nd, 2021, Major League Baseball (MLB) will celebrate Lou Gehrig Day, an annual tradition honoring the legendary New York Yankees first baseman and his courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This year's event marks the 80th anniversary of Gehrig's famous "Luckiest Man" speech, which he delivered at Yankee Stadium on July 4th, 1939, after being diagnosed with the disease.

In honor of Gehrig's legacy, all MLB teams will wear special number 4 decals on their uniforms. The Astros, Angels, Athletics, Mariners, and Rangers will also be participating in various activities to raise awareness for ALS and support those affected by the disease.

One of the highlights of Lou Gehrig Day will be the Astros' special celebration, which will feature a pregame ceremony honoring a local ALS hero and a postgame fireworks show. Astros fan Gill Garcia, who has been living with ALS for over 10 years, will share his story and talk about the importance of continuing to fight for a cure. The Astros will also be wearing special Lou Gehrig Day jerseys, which will be auctioned off after the game to benefit the ALS Association.
